I would have been excited to share the day with Kara, Chris, and their family anywhere they wanted to have the wedding. But having the wedding at the Lodge at Black Rapids, deep in the Alaska Range, in one of the most beautiful road accessible locations in the Interior, and with Mountains, and fresh Snow on the peaks, and an incredible timber framed lodge, and wonderful hosts in Annie & Mike Hopper, and then all the time we wanted for a relaxed wedding portrait session on a glacial fed river with PERFECT mountain light………well it just doesn’t get any better. I’m not even exaggerating.
If you’ve never been to this lodge, you should put it at the top of your list for places to visit. We have a special feeling for it as we recommended it to a wondeful couple that drove here all the way from New Jersey in a Volkswagen van to have their ceremony, and this just so happened to be the first wedding Annie & Mike had hosted there!
On the day of Kara & Chris’ wedding, I drove out of the sunny skies near Fairbanks, into the cloudy mountain weather of the AK Range. I was kind of bemoaning the weather change, but just as the ceremony crept closer, the skies opened and the mountains came out!
For smaller or intimate weddings (or any wedding where it works in the schedule), I always love to have the portrait session after the ceremony & meal. All the stress of the day is gone and the couple can get completely tied up in each other while a peace just kind of comes over them. We never have to watch the clock, we can explore the setting & be patient with the light, it’s just a wonderful way to end the day. And if we have to hike & climb up cliffs to get to the best spots, there’s no worry about the dress :)
